The Scary Future of Technology

This article is meant to give comfort that advances in technology most likely won't end in a catastrophic event. Which is a fear many Americans face, according to a survey done in this article, "72 percent of U.S. adults surveyed expressed worry over automation". This being the majority of people, the fear had to be addressed in an attempt to lower the level of fear.
Some of the fears that people face are the possibility of killer robots. Which the article tries to explain most likely won't be a result. Elon Musk states (in the article) that, "We have to figure out some way to ensure that the advent of digital superintelligence is one which is symbiotic with humanity. I think that's the single biggest exponential crisis we face." This gives comfort to people reading the article that technology companies think about their issues. Although, it still does not give another reason except they are facing this crisis. Not creating a high level of assurance.

Another fear that this article addressed is the advances in virtual reality and how it could affect people, especially children's wellbeing. Which the article provided some comfort about stating that there have been studies that say virtual reality reduces anxiety in children in medical procedures. Although, in the same section it says that there have been other studies that say technology gives children false memories and realities. Which affects the future of that child, affecting the future society.
This article continued to talk about many technologies and that they are monitoring them to assure that they are not harming the future. They did not do a very good job of creating assurance of this issue. They did explain parts of certain technologies and ways they can make sure that they are working well. But, they talked too much about how the future is very unpredictable and that there are always factors that could throw off the future creating catastrophic events.
Due to this issue, this article created many more fears about technology rather than create comfort about the future. This article establishes more fear than comfort, not making it the best article to help comfort readers about the future of technology.

Good overview of the issues, Madeleine. What are your thoughts on these issues though? Do you think the fears are warranted?
ReplyDeleteI think that the future can be scary and powerful. Although, we can never be sure of what will happen risks must be taken. The fears are valid because it is so uncertain change can be terrifying.
